Almost every Sunday, my friends and I gather for what we like to call, Vodka Sundays (to be fair, it doesn’t really mean we get together to drink vodkas. Usually, we watch random downloaded movies or tv shows and just catch up with each other, a great way to wind down the week. For some reason, Vodka Sunday was just the name that stuck). So last weekend we decided that we should try to make some of that skittle vodkas I’ve heard so much about.

We split a bottle of vodka in two halves, and put the red and orange skittles in one half, and the green and yellow skittles in the other half (in total, we used 4 bags of skittles). Unfortunately, we ended up leaving the skittles in the vodka for a week instead of the recommended 1-2 days. The result? The sugary stuff turned reeeeeeeeal nasty.

It looked much better after running it through a coffee filter

Drinking it straight … ? well I think this conversation pretty much sums it up:

“So, what will go well with this?”
“Diabetes”

Other notes:

goes pretty well with tonic water

green+yellow > red+orange

actually the red+orange kinda tastes like medicine if you drink it straight

looks pretty, it’d look even nicer if we had all 5 colours

This week is just going to be one of those weeks. You know?

I was having trouble sleeping last night (thanks alot, jetlag) and decided to try to put myself to sleep by reading a boring book. I only had Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on my e-reader (which is the complete opposite of boring, even if its my third read-through in like ten years), so I decided to roll on over to my bookshelf and pick a less exciting book. I was going for one of the many half-read Malcolm Gladwell books on my shelf (no offense, but I think he’s full of crap), when suddenly, this caught my eye:

That, on the right, is my copy of Actuarial Mathematics 2nd edition, by Bowers et al. And that stuff on it? Mould. Mould. On my book! Now, may come as a surprise to some of you, but despite the insanely humid weather here in Hong Kong (its a fairly common event when humidity reaches 90% or higher) I’ve never had a book go mouldy on me. Never! In my mind, I wept for the book. “Why! Why didn’t you take one of Malcom Gladwell’s books you damn spores?! Why Bowers!?“. Then I thought, “Wait! Its not over yet!”

According to Google, the first thing I want to do is dry the book. Air-drying it on my balcony wasn’t going to work, it was way too humid outside. I couldn’t air dry it inside the apartment either; I didn’t want the spores to spread. So in my distraught state, I threw the book into a plastic bag and chucked it into my freezer.

If I had a shrink, the conversation would probably go down like this:

me: Hey doc, do you think I made the right choice?
doc: Why do you ask?
me: Because, it felt like I was running away from the problem.
doc: Problem?
me: Yeah, its like the book represents my knowledge- slowly rotting away, deteriorating. And I didn’t do anything about it; just ran away.
doc: What would you of done differently?
me: Well for starters, I probably would of kept it out of the freezer- wait. Why are you asking so many questions? You’re pretty useless you know that?
doc: Why, of course. I’m only you.

The fact that I imagine myself talking to a shrink is probably a sign that I need to really look one up. The point is, I now have a frozen copy of the book. What the hell am I supposed to do with a FROZEN BOOK?

***

In other news, I registered for a new credit card a few months ago, and after failing to activate the auto-pay (apparently due to my inability to forge my own signature signature) I had re-applied for the autopay. Since then, I had been mailing in cheques on a monthly basis to pay the bills on this particular card. Little did I know, the autopay kicked in last month. Last month. Last month, my bill was huge. I had purchased a plane ticket to Europe on the card, as well as some … “minor” expenditures. This month, I hardly used that card at all. So I ended up overpaying my creditcard by a couple thousand dollars.

Worst part is that its only Monday oops looks like we are 15 minutes into Tuesday.

I need bookends. Not just any old boring bookends, I want nice funky bookends. It just seems to be one of those things you never need when you aren’t looking for it, and when you need it you don’t know where to find it. Twitter, Facebook and even Google have been pretty useless thus far, so I’m just going to give up. Instead, I’m just going to use random objects I find around the apartment for now:

Like this bottle of Coke

In fact, lets make it two bottles of coke.

A can of coffee is fine too

An A.Oryzae in a cup also works

My brick of a 360 is actually useful!

Psh! Who needs bookends! In related news, Surfer Girl reports that the new 360-Natal bundle will be slim, and black. Not that I need another bookend, but this bit is intersting:

And Natal? Let’s just say you’ll probably be both very surprised and very pleased by one of the games revealed… what is it?

Might Get Shot if I were to tell.

I’m so sick of IKEA furniture; In the past 3 weeks, I’ve put together 3 bookshelves (and a crapload of related accessories), a bed, a desk and a small dresser. I think the tipping point was the BILLY bookcase glass doors. Not only are the doors heavier than the actual bookcase, the installation was difficult and I was running into problems like the door handles not fitting properly without a little … “modification“. Naturally, I took my frustration to twitter:

cokematic: FUCK IKEA GLASS DOORS. FUCK THEM TO HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

I loved how little faith everyone has in my ability to detect the presence of a glass door.

digiwombat: @cokematic Did you fucking run into a glass door? Hahaha. PLEASE SAY YES!
owen_s: @cokematic …walked into one?
daedalusyumeno: @cokematic Epic fail if you actually thought there was nothing there.
Hitoribocchi: @cokematic I take it that you accidentally bumped into them, no?
TheFuzzy: @cokematic The guards are going to have a kick looping that security cam footage.

And yes. The BILLY bookcases do have glass door add-ons available (that was the second most asked question last night). Save yourself the trouble and get IKEA to install them for you (I won’t tell anyone not to get them, only because they look really nice).

Ps. I have never walked into a glass door before. Telephone poles, yes.

I have a carton of Californian milk in my kitchen.

You see, I’ve been known to purchase strange beverages and they usually don’t result in anything good. Case in point:

this bottle of random liquid from 7-11 for $19 HKD. It smelled like gasoline, and didn’t taste any better (unless, of course, you like the smell of gasoline).

Pirate beer. I bought it because of the pirate. In its defence, it wasn’t terrible.

Random Korean drink with a mushroom in it. It was terrible.

So I was down at the Park n Shop near my apartment the other day and with the price of bottled milk up 25% in recent weeks, I had to resort to buying milk in cartons for home (I still drink bottled milk only because I think it tastes better, just less often now). So imagine my surprise when I saw this in the milk aisle:

Milk from California? That went straight into my shopping basket. It doesn’t look sketchy at all. I mean its a “MILK BEVERAGE” (milk can come in non-beverage form?) and “MADE FROM FRESH MILK”

I grew up with shower doors, but since my new place is a rental, I can’t jsut go chaning the shower curtins to shower doors. I did, however, order the Periodic Table shower curtain (a la Big Bang Theory) on ThinkGeek on Sunday. Being a mathie, I actually wanted the 4600 digits of Pi one more, but it wasn’t the right dimension /sadface
