So I ran the Standard Chartered (half) marathon today, with a goal of finishing in 1.5 hours. Lets just say things didn’t go as planned and I ended up with a horrid time of 2 hours 9 minutes. I really don’t have any excuses, I just wasn’t prepared and I didn’t devote enough time to train (Getting only 2 hours of sleep the night before didn’t help my cause either). I told some people about how disappointed I was with my results and most of their answers were along the lines of ”Its ok, you tried your best” etc. While I know its social convention for them to be the optimistic one and all, in the back of my mind I was thinking to myself, “That’s total BS man. Total BSSSSS”. I guess sometimes trying your best is just not good enough; this is one of those times. Anyway, the marathon is over, nothing I can do about my crappy time, I’m just going to have to train harder for the next one!! >:o

Ok, now that I got that off my chest, guess what I got last week?!!!
That’s right, a care package from home! I was feeling very homesick as of late; I’m almost a quarter century old and this was the first time I spent CNY away from my family, so it was a big deal for me. Plus all the ass kicking Canada’s been handing out at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics just makes me want to be there for it all.

Yes, those are cinnamon sticks, and yes, hot apple cider form Second Cup!! The DVD was something Kev sent to my home in Toronto like 8 months ago, and I finally got it (its got like Gunparade March and Midori no Hibi on it, it probably would of been faster for me just to torrent it. Oh well)!

And of course, the Team Canada jersey! I’ve been sleeping with it on since I got it. The gold medal game is on at 4:30am local time tomorrow (that’s in like 6 hours!) , so I’ll be going to bed now so that can get up time to catch the game down at my favourite Canadian bar before work. Isn’t funny how I’m getting more sleep for the Canada-USA than for my marathon? …. :(

GO CANADA GO!

edit : OK so my favourite Canadian bar was already FULLY BOOKED!? It took me three phone calls before I could find a place with table for 8 people. Jeez!! I’ve never had to make reservations at a bar before =__=

So much fail, I don’t even…

While this was not an elimination game, there were bragging right to be had (and an automatic quarter-finals berth, but that’s just the bonus). I probably don’t need to tell you this, but hockey in land of the red and white is serious business. While I couldn’t watch the game live, with the help of the #canusa hashtag on twitter, following the game wasn’t too difficult (it also provided for some good entertainment).

These are just some of my favourite tweets from #canusa …

pennachetti: Haha I’ve never seen my dog watch the tv until now
(multiple sources) CBC Announcers: “Sidney Crosby. The only thing Canada can put in the net.”

Final score : USA 5 – CANADA 3

marygazze: Canadians still talk about the 1972 series v. Russia. My Q. to Americans: will u talk about this game 38 years from now?

38 years from now, Americans might not remember this game, but we Canadians? Probably will.

Trouble started early for Team Canada; penalty woes as well as Brodeur’s constant brainfarts:

Hockeyvampiress: If that 5 hole was any bigger it could replace one of the olympic rings
samsoloway: I hate life right now. Seriously Canada? SERIOUSLY?! Do you even want to win this game?!
ttJess: I guess no one gave Team USA (or Brodeur) the memo that Canada is supposed to win this whole thing.
The_Boozecan: Dear Team Canada: I think you misread our instructions.
buzzbishop: when Flames fans start asking for luongo, you know it’s bad. HOOK. MARTY.

Re: Crosby’s penalty

Kardboard: CROSBY DON’T MAKE THE TIMBITS HOCKEY KIDS CRY

Re USA’s penalty

Tucktovich: USA kills the penalty, and probably Canada’s hope for this game. FML

Re: Crosby scoring to make it 4 – 3 USA (with 3 mins remaining)

HannahSung: If we can tie this in 3 minutes, the whole country will be hungover tomorrow morning. If not, a different kind of hangover

Empty netter sealed the deal for Team USA (aside for the huge string of profanities)

KenGHarrison: The last scoring play of the game tells the story: The US just wanted it more.

The aftermath; from embarrassment…

samanthasaad: I’m dying inside.
supbec: i’m so embarrassed right now.
Webconomist: ugh. Shamed. Totally shamed.

to anger…

accophox: It’s 5-3 USA. Don’t go downtown. There -will- be riots.
iubiam: Please don’t do anything too embarrassing tonight. Or at least take the flag off from around your neck first.
Kardboard: Brodeur, GTFO [get the fuck out] of Vancouver. While you still can.
body_politic: I’m going to need Botox after this game. The stress!
THEAaronMiller: You want to steal Hockey from us, USA? Well I am going to Quiznos tomorrow and I will begin my quest to take obesity from you.
cglynne: Aren’t we supposed to be schooling everyone in OUR game?!? What the hell is going on here. Are these guys even Canadian?
(Don’t tell cglynne, but Bordeur does have American citizenship…)

to total denial …

mishelly888: Hopefully basketball will soon become Canada’s national sport. Hockey doesn’t seem to be cutting it.
jhclee: We’ll get back at them later in curling I guess lol.
iAmJazzy: i think canada just wants to play more games. fake out their competition with mediocre play… right? right?
THEAaronMiller: Hockey was always just a passing fancy. We are really a Snowboard Cross country anyway.
sweet_pea00: … Oh well, we still have healthcare.

But I think we all agree that, tonight, Miller was the better man…

Hear_It_Here: I don’t know why all you Americans are cheering Team USA. It was Team Miller.
aliliebs: i have a love-hate thing w/ ryan miller. actually, it’s kinda hate-hate but you gotta give him credit for being incredible tonight.

Of course, my American Canadian hating friends wasted little time:

bringstabbity: Since USA beat Canada at hockey, for the next year all Timbits will be replaced with cheeseburgers

icystorm: Hey, @cokematic and @Fasalina, I just want to say that Canada sucks.
cokematic: @icystorm YOU DONT EVEN WATCH HOCKEY YOU DAMN HIPPIE
icystorm: @cokematic LOL I don’t. But how does that make me a hippie?
bringstabbity: @icystorm California is the hippie motherland, duh

Being ridiculed by someone with the username “hellokikitty”, probably an all-time low for me:

hellokikitty: IN YOUR FACE CANADA 5-3 USA! BOOYAH! Way to be retards and pull Brodeur! I knew you’d do that and get PWNED. PWNED I TELL YOU!

But in the end, its all about the CANADIAN PASSION (well no, It’s all about winning and bragging rights but I’m stil lin the denial stage):

TheToddNewberg: #canusa Y’all the tweets are seriously awesome, very passionate sports fans

Thank you twitter, thank you everyone who participated in the #canusa tweets, and thank you Team USA. Prior to the start of the 2010 games, my predictions for Men’s Hokey was

“Russia beats Canada by a score of 4 – 2 in the gold medal round”

Well now that we didn’t pull off the win against the Americans, I guess it’s goodbye Gold Medal match against teh Russians. Instead, we’ll be facing them after we beat Germany. Hopefully this will be the wake-up call that Team Canada needs to get them to step up their game (that, or they will crash and burn like back in Torino ’06).

I’m still going to wear my Team Canada jersey to bed … Go Canada Go!

ps. I’m still a huge Marty fan, but yeah, he really didn’t bring his A game tonight, nor did he bring his B game… nor his C… maybe it was an E-?
